Description

This book is the result of the Founders’ Day Lecture I delivered at the University of Nigeria on October 7, 2014. It is simply a good-faith effort to offer suggestions for moving the country forward. It is aimed less at dictating than at challenging us to examine contemporary problems that defy or undermine efforts to build the country of our dreams. It is an account of some of the things Nigeria must do to unlock the nation’s vast potential, currently stymied by a constellation of factors

Praise for Who Will Love My Country

Senator Ike Ekweremadu’s reputation for prudence and commitment to national interest remains unmatched. These virtues are exquisitely on display in his well-written book Who Will Love My Country. His analysis of Nigeria’s problems and challenges, and his prescriptions for progress, deserve the attention of all. Read this book, and you will appreciate why Senator Ekweremadu is one of Nigeria’s profound and erudite scholars.—Senator David Mark, former President of the Senate

In a country in search of stability and peace, where democracy does not work as it should, and national unity is under siege, Senator Ike Ekweremadu’s elegantly written and well-researched book,  Who Will Love My Country, offers prescriptions and ideas that will move Nigeria closer to its aspirations for peace, progress, and change. He writes with inimitable clarity and eloquence and has made suggestions Nigeria can only ignore at its peril.—Professor George Obiozor, former Nigerian Ambassador to the United States

This highly informative book, Who Will Love My Country, represents Senator Ekweremadu at his best. A review of Nigeria’s history over the past 20 years shows that Senator Ekweremadu has consistently been right about the country’s problems and challenges. Senator Ekweremadu, one of Nigeria’s astute politicians and finest thinkers, provides a comprehensive, thoughtful, and balanced analysis of Nigeria that is not easy to find in other books—Senator Taslim Folarin

Senator Ekweremadu’s book, Who Will Love My Country, demonstrates an exemplary ability to identify cutting-edge issues that advance both our political and normative understanding of the key issues of our time, particularly governance, democracy, federalism, and ethnic and religious challenges. Some of the issues raised in this book are not new, but the way Senator Ekweremadu makes his case and his insights are distinctively valuable because of the range, nature, and tenor of his arguments and analysis.—Professor Okechukwu Oko, Dodson-Hook Distinguished Professor of Law, Southern University Law Center, Baton Rouge, Louisiana

No person has so described Nigeria’s problems as Senator Ike Ekweremadu in his beautifully written, elegantly intelligent, and analytical book Who Will Love My Country. He cautions leaders to use powers justly and effectively to maintain order and elevate the moral and material well-being of citizens. Nigeria cannot be the country citizens so desperately want it to be without heeding Senator Ekweremadu’s wise counsel.—Professor Maxwell Giddado, SAN
